"The BIG Ideas"

Workshop for 6-8 Mathematics

In this two-day workshop middle school teachers explore the "Big Ideas" - key concepts - in the middle grades mathematics curriculum. Participants have the opportunity to think about how the middle school student learns mathematics as well as instructional strategies and learning environments that support sense making and problem solving.

The "Big Ideas" workshop supports the NCTM Principles and Standards and most state standards for teaching mathematics and is grounded in relevant research that supports mathematics teaching and learning. In particular, participants will have the opportunity to explore the following:

Special Plans To Suit Your District's Needs

Customized training is offered as Educational Enrichment realizes that schools and districts have different needs. You may be adopting new texts, preparing for assessments, or simply wanting to strengthen and enhance your mathematics curriculum. Let us know what is going on in your district and we'll do our best to tailor your workshop to address your particular needs.

About The Book Developing Mathematical Fluency

Developing Mathematical Fluency (DMF) is a mathematics activity book designed for use with students in grades 5-8 and is the required text for the "Big Ideas" workshop. Mathematical fluency involves a breadth of mathematical knowledge, being able to reason mathematically and compute accurately, efficiently and flexibly (NCTM, 2000). The unique approach in DMF is based on published research with students and the meaningful and engaging activities have been carefully tested in classrooms. Emphasis is placed on problem solving, fractions, decimals, and percent. DMF focuses on building mathematical understanding and computational proficiency rather than drill and practice. Fundamental to the implementation of this mathematics program is the Problem Centered Learning instructional strategy, in which students work in groups and explain their reasoning to other students. DMF is also appropriate for home schooling and interested parents. (item #06-1002 $34.95)
