ABOUT THE AUTHORS Australian born Anne Reynolds, Ph.D is a workshop author, teacher/educator, researcher, writer and dynamic professional development presenter who still finds plenty of time to spend in public school classrooms working with students and teachers. She also works closely with teachers in training. Known and respected world-wide for her expertise and leadership in mathematics education, Dr. Reynolds is frequently invited to write articles for journals and present at national and international conferences. Her primary research interests are: How students learn mathematics; Imagery in mathematics learning; Learning in a social setting; and Qualitative methodology. She is author of numerous articles and research papers and is co-author of The Big Ideas for 6-8 Mathematics, and Coming to Know Number: A Mathematics Activity Resource for Elementary School Teachers. Sandra Trowell, Ph.D. is a leader in mathematics education who has taught in the public schools and at the university level. Dr. Trowell's varied interests include teaching the key concepts or "Big Ideas", problem solving, the learning environment and assessing students' understanding. She is involved with both preservice and postservice teacher education and frequently can be found in the public schools leading teachers and students in thought-provoking tasks. Dr. Trowell is an excellent workshop presenter and is co-author of the The Big Ideas for 6-8 Mathematics.
Grayson Wheatley, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Florida State University began his educational career as a secondary mathematics teacher in Maryland. After completing his Ph.D at the University of Delaware, he became a professor at Purdue University where he taught mathematics and education courses while pursuing a vigorous research program. In 1988 he joined the faculty of Florida State University as chair of mathematics education, continuing his teaching, research, and consulting with schools. Dr. Wheatley is internationally known for his research on mathematics learning. He has authored 22 books ranging from school mathematics textbooks to college statistics texts. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters on such subjects as problem solving, spatial visualization, instructional strategies, and brain activity. He currently consults with schools nation-wide and frequently speaks at professional conferences. Dr. Wheatley is co-author of our 6-8 workshop textbook Developing Mathematical Fluency.
George Abshire, co-author of Developing Mathematical Fluency, currently teaches 7th grade mathematics at Jenks(OK) Middle School, where he has taught for the past twenty years. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and was recognized as the 1997 Teacher of the Year for the State of Oklahoma. In addition, George received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching in 1995. He firmly believes that all students can enjoy mathematics and achieve success. In his classes, students learn to reason mathematically, work with others to solve problems, and use technology effectively and appropriately. Mr. Abshire is an advocate of Problem Centered Learning and a driving force in the mathematics reform movement. He frequently presents at state, regional and national conferences.
Kathy Richardson is recognized as one of the nation's leading educators of elementary mathematics. She has spent over 30 years teaching classroom teachers, working with elementary students, writing books and developing teacher resource materials. In addition to being the author of Math Time: The Learning Environment, and a series of professional development videos that are used nationwide by school districts, universities and colleges; she is author of the newly-revised, three-book series Developing Number Concepts. Kathy is recognized as one of the most respected educators in mathematics today. She has devoted the past 15 years to working with teachers throughout the country; helping them to learn how to teach mathematics for true understanding and concept development.
